Dev Diary #13 – Gamey Challenges!

Writer's picture: Lucas OlivieriLucas Olivieri

We posted our first videos on our YouTube channel, and the support from the YouTube community has truly left us speechless. This is a totally new channel, starting with 0 subscribers, and in 4 days, we have 57 subscribers and over 1.4k views across two videos. YouTube somehow saw that our videos were above average and really promoted them, and we’re very grateful for it.

The comments we’ve received have warmed our hearts and we’re super committed to making more videos (we have filmed two more already) and improving every time we upload.

A lot of research was done before posting something. Research that showed that YouTube wasn’t luck, but merit based, but we didn’t know for sure until our first upload. I don’t know how that algorithm discovers good videos in zero-sub channels, but I’m glad it’s found ours.

As for the content we’re posting, we’re very different from what you might be used to seeing from game studios and game dev channels. We are not posting about game development. Instead, we are filming challenge videos, and inserting our game’s gameplay elements into the challenges.

In our first video, I cleaned my living room floor with a toothbrush, and after every 20 tiles, I answered a trivia question from UniKaos, to unlock a buff, or get debuffed.

In our second video, I drank a gallon of water using chopsticks, and after drinking 1L, 2L, etc, I answered a trivia question, and even opened a lootbox.

Our channel is about mixing gaming with these challenges. Challenge channels are all over YouTube, but we’re putting our spin on it. We’re heavily inspired by MrBeast (thank you Jimmy for all your interviews... I feel like I went to YouTube university before posting our first video) and the movie Free Guy.

Check out our channel and subscribe for future videos! We’ll try our best to upload once per week!

See you in two weeks

-Lucas
